The Punjab government has announced a major financial relief package for women students under its electric bike (e-bike) scheme, making two-wheel transport more affordable for students across the province.
Under the revised plan, women students will only pay an interest-free monthly installment of Rs. 2,100, while the provincial government will bear the cost of the down payment and registration fee.
The decision was approved during a meeting of the Punjab Transport and Mass Transit Department chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
Government to Cover Upfront Costs
As part of the updated scheme, the Punjab government will pay:
- Down payment for the e-bike
- Registration fee
This means eligible women students will not have to make any upfront payment and will instead repay the cost through interest-free monthly installments of Rs. 2,100.
The move is expected to make the scheme more accessible for students from low- and middle-income families.
Scheme Aims to Increase Women’s Mobility
Officials said the initiative is intended to encourage greater participation of women in higher education by improving access to affordable transportation.
Reliable transport remains a challenge for many female students, particularly those who travel long distances to schools, colleges, and universities.
By reducing the financial burden of purchasing an e-bike, the government hopes to support:
- Easier access to educational institutions
- Greater independence for women students
- Reduced transportation costs
- Increased participation in higher education
Punjab Expands E-Bike Scheme
During the meeting, the chief minister also approved a significant expansion of the provincial e-bike initiative.
According to the plan:
- 100,000 e-bikes will be distributed to students over the next year.
- The government will provide a Rs. 70,000 subsidy per e-bike.
The expansion forms part of Punjab’s broader strategy to promote environmentally friendly transportation while supporting students.
Part of Punjab’s Green Transport Initiative
The e-bike program is a key component of the province’s green mobility policy, which aims to:
- Encourage electric vehicle adoption
- Reduce fuel consumption
- Lower carbon emissions
- Promote sustainable transportation
The initiative also complements other public transport projects currently being introduced across Punjab.
Why This Matters
Transportation costs are a significant barrier for many students, particularly women pursuing higher education. By eliminating the initial purchase costs and offering interest-free monthly installments, the Punjab government aims to make personal transportation more affordable while promoting educational access and sustainable mobility.
Further details regarding eligibility criteria, the application process, and the distribution schedule are expected to be announced by the Punjab government in the coming weeks.
