The Punjab government has launched a major workforce development initiative aimed at providing practical and industry-relevant skill training to nearly 90,000 students by 2029.
The six-year Improving Workforce Readiness in Punjab Project, which began in 2023, is designed to reduce the gap between technical education and the actual skills required by employers.
According to project documents cited by Wealth Pakistan, the initiative will modernize technical and vocational education, upgrade training institutes and introduce courses based on labor market demand.
90,000 Students to Receive Industry-Relevant Training
The project aims to equip around 90,000 students with job-ready skills before its completion in 2029.
Instead of relying mainly on conventional classroom instruction, training programs will focus on competency-based learning and practical skills.
The goal is to prepare students for real workplace requirements and improve their chances of securing sustainable employment after completing technical education.
19 Technical Institutes to Become Centers of Excellence
A major part of the project involves upgrading 19 technical and vocational institutes into Centers of Excellence.
These include:
- 16 TEVTA institutes
- 3 Punjab Vocational Training Council (PVTC) institutes
The upgraded institutions are expected to offer specialized training, modern facilities and courses aligned with industry requirements.
Skill Training to Focus on Eight High-Growth Sectors
Students will receive market-oriented training in eight priority sectors considered important for Punjab’s economy.
| Priority Sector | Training Focus |
|---|---|
| Automotive | Vehicle and automotive industry skills |
| ICT | Information technology and digital skills |
| Tourism | Hospitality and tourism services |
| Food Processing | Food production and processing skills |
| Textile | Textile and manufacturing skills |
| Construction | Technical and construction trades |
| Healthcare | Healthcare-related workforce skills |
| Light Engineering | Industrial and engineering skills |
These sectors have been identified as major areas for future employment and economic growth in Punjab.
Courses to Be Designed According to Job Market Demand
One of the most important features of the project is the development of training programs based on a skills mapping study.
The study will help identify:
- Skills currently required by employers
- Shortages of trained workers
- Emerging employment opportunities
- Future workforce requirements
Technical institutes will be able to update their curricula according to changing labor market needs rather than continuing with outdated training programs.
Technical Education System to Be Modernized
The project will also modernize Punjab’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) management system.
At the same time, the Labor Market Information System will be strengthened to provide reliable workforce data.
The improved system is expected to help policymakers, training institutions and industry leaders understand where skilled workers are needed and which courses should receive greater attention.
What This Means for Students
For students interested in technical education, the project could provide access to training that is more closely connected with actual employment opportunities.
Students may benefit from:
- Practical and competency-based training
- Industry-focused courses
- Modernized technical institutes
- Skills linked to growing economic sectors
- Better preparation for employment
The focus on ICT, healthcare, construction, textile and other high-demand sectors could be particularly important for young people seeking alternatives to traditional university degree programs.
Why Punjab Needs More Skilled Workers
Punjab’s industrial and services sectors continue to expand, increasing demand for trained workers in technology, manufacturing, construction, healthcare and food processing.
However, employers frequently face difficulties finding workers with the practical skills required for specialized jobs.
The workforce readiness project aims to address this gap by linking technical education more directly with industry demand.
Focus on Youth Employment and Economic Growth
Officials believe the initiative will improve youth employability while creating a more productive and future-ready workforce.
By training nearly 90,000 students by 2029 and upgrading technical institutions, Punjab aims to strengthen vocational education and support the province’s long-term economic competitiveness.
For students considering technical and vocational education, the project also signals a growing government focus on skills that can lead directly to employment and industry opportunities.
