The permanent campus project of COMSATS University Islamabad in Abbottabad is facing significant delays as the project has yet to receive the required government funding, raising concerns about its future completion.
According to official details, the university’s Abbottabad Campus is currently operating from leased premises at Tobe Camp, where approximately 6,000 students are enrolled.
Permanent Campus Project Still Awaiting Funding
To accommodate growing academic needs, COMSATS University proposed the development of a dedicated permanent campus in Abbottabad.
In 2020, the university submitted a project titled:
Infrastructure Development of COMSATS University Islamabad Permanent Campus, Abbottabad
The proposed campus was designed as a modern educational facility covering more than 324,000 square feet.
Project Approved but Not Yet Funded
The development project received approval from the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) in May 2021.
Project Highlights
| Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| Project | COMSATS Permanent Campus Abbottabad |
| Approved Cost | Rs. 3.49 Billion |
| Approval Year | 2021 |
| Planned Capacity | 6,000 Students |
| Status | Awaiting Government Funding |
Despite approval, the project has not yet been included in the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) allocation of the Ministry of Science and Technology.
Why the Delay Matters
Officials say most of the infrastructure work remains incomplete because of the lack of funding.
As a result:
- Construction progress has slowed
- Key facilities remain unfinished
- The planned relocation of students cannot proceed
- Long-term campus planning remains uncertain
Current Campus Operating on Leased Premises
The Abbottabad Campus currently functions from Tobe Camp, a facility owned by the Pakistan Army.
The lease arrangement was extended for 30 years, allowing the university to continue academic operations while work on the permanent campus was expected to move forward.
However, with funding still pending, the transition to the new campus remains uncertain.
What This Means for Students
At present, academic activities continue normally at the existing campus.
However, delays in the permanent campus project could affect:
- Future expansion plans
- Student capacity growth
- Development of new academic facilities
- Research and laboratory infrastructure
University officials are hoping the project will be included in future PSDP allocations so construction can move forward and the permanent campus can become operational.
