Punjab Makes PGET Mandatory for Postgraduate Medical Residency Admissions

The Punjab government has made the Post Graduate Entrance Test (PGET) a mandatory requirement for admission to Level-III postgraduate medical residency programs, starting with the January 2027 induction.

The decision was announced through an official notification issued by the Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Department following recommendations of the Post Graduate Admission Committee during its meeting held on July 8, 2026.

PGET Now Required for Residency Admissions

Under the new policy, all candidates seeking admission to Level-III residency programs in Punjab must first qualify the Post Graduate Entrance Test (PGET).

The requirement will apply to admissions in the following postgraduate medical programs:

  • MS (Master of Surgery)
  • MD (Doctor of Medicine)
  • MDS (Master of Dental Surgery)
  • FCPS (Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons)

Candidates will only be considered for induction after successfully qualifying the entrance test.

UHS Lahore to Conduct the Test

According to the notification, the University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore has been designated as the conducting body for the Post Graduate Entrance Test.

The university will announce the operational details of the examination separately.

Minimum Qualifying Score

To qualify for the PGET, candidates must secure a minimum qualifying percentile of 75.

The department has clarified that while passing the entrance test will be mandatory, eligibility and final merit for Level-III residency admissions will continue to be determined according to the criteria notified by the Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Department.

  • Test schedule
  • Application procedure
  • Syllabus
  • Examination pattern
  • Other operational guidelines

Applicants are advised to monitor official announcements from UHS for further updates.

Effective From January 2027

The notification was issued on July 9, 2026, and the new policy will apply to all Level-III postgraduate medical residency admissions beginning with the January 2027 induction cycle.
