The Punjab government has postponed its proposed English proficiency training program for 35,000 teachers after teachers’ organizations raised objections to the assessment method planned for the initiative.
The program was designed to evaluate teachers’ English proficiency before training through an online assessment system.
Teachers Object to Online Assessment Method
According to reports, the proposed program included:
π An online assessment through Google Forms
to evaluate teachers’ capabilities before the training sessions.
However, teachers’ unions argued that assessing educators solely through an online test would not provide an accurate measure of their teaching abilities and language proficiency.
Following these concerns, education authorities decided to review the program.
Training to Be Held at Tehsil Level
According to officials, the Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board has now decided that the English proficiency training will be conducted at the:
π Tehsil level instead of the district level
Officials said the revised approach is intended to make the training process more accessible and effective for teachers across Punjab.
Rs. 2 Billion Already Released for the Program
Authorities confirmed that the government has already allocated:
π° Rs. 2 billion
to the Education Department for implementing the English training initiative.
The program is part of broader efforts to strengthen English language teaching standards in government schools across Punjab.
New Schedule Under Preparation
Officials said a revised schedule for the tehsil-level training program is currently being prepared.
The updated training plan will be issued after receiving final approval from the relevant authorities.
Focus on Improving English Teaching Standards
The proposed initiative aims to improve:
- English language teaching skills
- Classroom instruction methods
- Teacher capacity building
- Student learning outcomes in English
Education officials say further details regarding the revised training model and implementation timeline will be announced once the review process is completed.
