HEC Makes Artificial Intelligence Course Mandatory in Universities

The Higher Education Commission Pakistan (HEC) has directed public universities across Pakistan to introduce a mandatory 3-credit-hour course titled “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence” in relevant degree programs.

The decision forms part of HEC’s broader strategy to integrate artificial intelligence education into higher education and equip students with future-ready digital skills.

AI Course to Be Introduced in Relevant Degree Programs

According to officials, the new course will become a compulsory component of relevant academic programs and will be implemented in phases across universities.

HEC has instructed institutions to begin incorporating the course into their curricula immediately in line with the commission’s policy guidelines.

Vice Chancellors Endorse the Initiative

The proposal was also endorsed during a consultative meeting of university vice-chancellors.

Officials said the initiative reflects growing recognition of artificial intelligence as an essential area of knowledge for students preparing for technology-driven industries and evolving job markets.

ITU Lahore Developed the Course Modules

According to officials, the Information Technology University Lahore (ITU) prepared:

and have now been shared with public-sector universities for implementation.

Public Universities in Punjab Receive Formal Instructions

A formal letter has also been issued to public universities in Punjab to facilitate the introduction of AI education across higher education institutions.

Officials said universities have been encouraged to adopt the approved framework and integrate artificial intelligence concepts into their academic offerings.

According to HEC, the initiative aims to:
